In an adult individual, the skeletal system is comprised of 206 bones. These bones provide structure to the body and allow for movement, as well as provide protection for vital organs and tissues. Bones contain bone marrow where blood cells are created. Bones also act as storage reservoirs for calcium and other minerals that the body needs. Specialized bones serve other functions, such as those in the middle ear that help transmit sound vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear.
